The coupling halves arenormally threaded with a special round thread to BS336 and screwed together to compressa sealing washer. Unlike the instantaneous coupling this arrangement produces an effectiveseal under suction conditions. Direction of flow of water is conventionally from the femalehalf to the male half of a coupling. The threaded part of the female half swivels relative tothe tail so that the coupling halves can be screwed together without twisting the hose.Female halves have 4 lugs and male halves 2 lugs.
