The use of additive manufacturing within the medical market is developing continually. We were the first metal AM bureau in the UK to achieve ISO 13485:2003 Medical Devices certification which enables us to work with medical customers throughout the UK and Europe. One of the advantages of AM is that we are able to work from MRI and CT data. Using this, we have worked with the team at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust on the production of titanium cranial implants. The implants benefit surgeons and patients by reducing the time in theatre, making the process less traumatic for the patient and producing better aesthetic outcomes. We have also produced theatre instruments for use in complex spinal surgery and work with a number of other medical companies on a wide range of projects. The technology’s ability to make complex geometries is starting to be exploited and we are keen to work collaboratively within the medical field.
