Famous Grouse Structure

13-11-2014

The WEC Laser team were involved in the manufacturing of a sculpture for The Famous Grouse "Be Part of Something Famous" campaign last year, in collaboration with Marshmallow Laser Feast and Studio Roso. The kinetic sculpture, containing more than 51,204 characters, is brought to life by thousands of people from across the globe who answered the question "What would you like to be famous for?" The most inspiring responses were laser cut onto strips of aluminium using our fibre laser cutting machine. The strips were then folded, welded together and made into part of the sculpture. The collaborative project has seen over 20 countries participate. Over 1,500 submissions were selected to reflect the diverse array of answers about fame, ranging from securing equal rights for all people to discovering life on another planet. Wayne Wild, WEC Group Director, said: "We were delighted to be a part of such an inspiring project. It's fascinating to see the different answers people from around the world came up with and we worked extremely hard to get the words laser cut perfectly." The sculpture is just over 5m high and just under 5m wide at the widest point, weighs around 300 kilos and consists of more than 62 copper-plated strips forming a giant spiral. Using specialist light and a remotely controlled robotic arm which sits at the heart of the sculpture, the laser-cut words can then be projected onto all surrounding walls and surfaces. Asanka De Silva, Global Brand Controller for The Famous Grouse, said: "This sculpture is just the start of a new journey for the Famous Grouse brand, as we bring to life the power of collaboration which is an everyday part of our life in making a truly famous whisky." WEC Laser offers a variety of Laser Cutting Services nationwide. Continuous investment in the latest laser cutting technology and production space has led to WEC Laser becoming one of the largest sub-contract Laser Cutting Companies in the UK.
