Specialist Production Of Tensioning System Components For Dinorwic Marina Harbour Gate Restoration Project
Situated along the picturesque Menai Strait in North Wales, Dinorwic Marina – also known as Port Dinorwic – was first developed in the 18th century as a vital port serving the renowned Dinorwic Slate Quarry. Now a Grade II listed site, the marina’s historical charm is reflected in its original architecture, which sits comfortably alongside more modern additions.
In recent years, the marina had fallen into disrepair due to neglect under its former ownership. Lack of investment led to deteriorating infrastructure and financial instability, leaving both the facilities and staff in a precarious position. However, a turning point arrived with the Waterside Consortium – a group of local investors who have since set out an ambitious vision to revitalise the site and restore it to its former standing.
One key element of this restoration effort centres on the two pairs of original wooden harbour gates, which had begun to fail. Structural issues including warped and bowed timber were largely due to missing, corroded, or fatigued tensioning components critical to the gates’ operation and water retention.
Brooks Forgings was commissioned to design, manufacture and supply new tension system components to bring the gates back into functional condition. The lack of proper tensioning had rendered the gates ineffective in holding water, compromising the marina’s operation.
Bespoke M36 Tension System Components for a Tidal Challenge
Due to tidal constraints, the project required precise planning and a tight turnaround. Restoration work could only be carried out during low tide windows, making the lead time for component supply absolutely critical.
Each complete tension system was manufactured to M36 x 7600mm, providing a wide range of adjustability post-installation. Forged eyebolts were produced in lengths of 650mm and 5800mm, designed to keep the turnbuckles and couplers offset above the waterline for ease of adjustment during and after fitting.
In total, eight full tensioning systems were delivered to site. These components were developed from detailed 3D models, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in both manufacture and installation.
Brooks Forgings is proud to have played a part in safeguarding the heritage of Dinorwic Marina by supplying critical hardware to ensure the structural integrity of this historic site’s harbour infrastructure.
