Tension System Components For Tyne South Pier Head Lighthouse Restoration

20-12-2024

Brooks Forgings was commissioned to manufacture and supply a new roof tensioning system for the iconic lighthouse at the end of the River Tyne South Pier in South Shields.

Tensioning System Specification

Six complete sets were supplied for the Tyne South Pier Head Lighthouse project. Each set included:

  • Two clevis ends with lock nuts.
  • Clevis pins.
  • A tie bar measuring 2,500 mm in length.

The total length of the M20 tension system assemblies was 2,644 mm, ensuring precise fitment for the Grade II listed structure.

Impact of Storm Babet

In October 2023, Storm Babet caused severe damage to the pier and lighthouse. Strong winds and high waves ripped off the lighthouse’s distinctive white and red roof/dome, which was lost to the sea.

Given the lighthouse’s Grade II listed status, repairs needed to adhere closely to the original design and construction methods. However, modern materials were permitted to enhance durability and reduce the risk of future storm damage.

Upgrading to Stainless Steel

The original roof/dome was secured with tensioning bars made from mild steel. After careful evaluation, project engineers opted to replace these with stainless steel components for superior corrosion resistance and long-term reliability.

Brooks Forgings manufactured the components using 316 (A4) stainless steel, known for its high corrosion resistance and suitability for harsh marine environments.

Components Supplied

Each of the six tensioning systems included:

  • Clevis ends: Machined from stainless steel and supplied with lock nuts and clevis pins.
  • Tie bars: Precision-engineered to a length of 2,500 mm.
  • Fabricated brackets: Six brackets were provided in stainless steel to support the tension systems effectively.

A Reliable Solution for Historic Structures

By using modern stainless steel materials, Brooks Forgings ensured the tensioning system offers a safe and durable solution that aligns with the lighthouse’s historic design while minimising future maintenance needs.
