Tie Bars For Hammersmith Suspension Bridge Temporary Hanger Support System
Brooks Forgings has a proud history of contributing to the restoration of historic bridges, including the Union Chain Bridge in Northumberland and the Menai Suspension Bridge in Anglesey.
Our latest project involved producing and supplying tie bars of varying lengths for a new temporary hanger bypass support system on the Hammersmith Suspension Bridge in West London.
The Hammersmith Suspension Bridge
Spanning the River Thames, this iconic bridge links the Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham to the Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Completed in 1887, it was designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette and is a Grade II listed structure.
Following a structural survey in 2019, it was discovered that many elements of the bridge were suffering from stress-related fatigue cracking, leading to its closure to motor traffic. Restoration works are planned in stages, with completion forecast for 2029, subject to funding.
Stabilisation Efforts with Custom Tie Bars
As part of the bridge’s stabilisation, a bypass assembly was developed to reduce the load on existing hanger components. Given the varying lengths of hanger sections across the bridge, Brooks Forgings manufactured bespoke tie rods tailored to the specific requirements of each assembly.
Key Specifications:
- Material: Tie bars were manufactured from L7 material, known for its strength and durability.
- Lengths: 18 variants ranging from 1560 mm to 3330 mm, threaded 250 mm at each end.
- Components: Each set included:
- M20 tie bars.
- 100 x 100 x 25 mm washer plates.
- Nuts, conical seats, and spherical washers.
- All components were galvanised for enhanced corrosion resistance.
Rigorous Testing and Certification
Given the critical nature of the project, all components underwent extensive testing and certification to meet stringent safety standards:
- 100% Magnetic Particle Inspection to detect surface defects.
- Ultimate Tensile Load Testing to a minimum of 203 kN.
- Impact Testing at 30J at -40°C to ensure performance under extreme conditions.
Project Delivery
Brooks Forgings supplied 144 tie bars, delivered on schedule for the Winter 2024 installation programme.
